Tennessee AFL-CIO President Billy Dycus issued the following statement on the passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

"Tennessee’s working families join our brothers and sisters across the country in mourning the sudden and tragic loss of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. No words can adequately describe the sadness that we are feeling. Today is a dark day for every worker.

President Trumka was the epitome of both a legend and a leader. Beginning his labor journey as president of the United Mine Workers of America, he knew firsthand the true power of workers and the change that can arise from collective action. As president of the AFL-CIO, his powerful voice led America’s labor movement through some of its biggest challenges in decades, including the COVID-19 pandemic. President Trumka dedicated his entire life to ensuring that all workers had a seat at the table and were treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve.

Today, the entire labor movement is heartbroken. But tomorrow, we recommit ourselves to carrying on President Trumka’s legacy with action. His impact on the AFL-CIO’s 12.5 million members will be felt for generations to come, and we will continue to strive towards his goal of building an economy and society that lifts up all workers and every community. Rest in peace, President Trumka."
