President's Message on Special Election
The voters of Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District have spoken, and while we are disappointed in the outcome, we respect the decision made by the people of this great state. The Tennessee AFL-CIO was proud to endorse Aftyn Behn because she consistently stood with working families, championed the right to organize, and never wavered in her belief that every Tennessean deserves a fair shot. Her campaign kept the focus where it belongs: on jobs, wages, public services, and the dignity of work.
Aftyn brought energy, clarity, and compassion to this race. She made working people a priority in every conversation, and she reminded many across the district just how important it is to have leaders who understand the challenges facing everyday families. We are grateful for her commitment and for the hundreds of union members who volunteered, knocked doors, and made their voices heard at the ballot box.
With Matt Van Epps now elected to complete the remainder of the term, we hope he will take seriously the responsibility places in his hands. Working Tennesseans need someone in Washington who will improve job quality, protect retirement security, strengthen public education, invest in our infrastructure, and defend the fundamental right to join a union. These are not partisan issues; they are the backbone of a strong economy and thriving communities.
Our message to Congressman-Elect Van Epps is simple:
We stand ready to work with anyone who works for us.
The labor movement has always believed in accountability, and we will support any effort that strengthens the lives of working families; regardless of who sponsors it. We also won’t hesitate to speak up when legislation threatens workers’ rights or undermines their ability to earn a decent living.
Tennessee’s working men and women deserve a strong voice in Washington. We hope Congressman-Elect Van Epps will be that voice, and we encourage him to engage with organized labor as a partner in building a better future for our state.
As always, the Tennessee AFL-CIO will continue fighting every day for safer workplaces, fair wages, and the freedom to organize. That work doesn’t stop with one election.
In solidarity,
Billy Dycus
President, Tennessee AFL-CIO Labor Council
