Tennessee AFL-CIO Mourns the Passing of Labor Leader Vonda McDaniel
The Tennessee AFL-CIO is deeply saddened by the passing of Vonda McDaniel, a tireless advocate for working people, a respected labor leader, and a cherished friend to countless union members across the state.
For decades, Vonda dedicated her life to improving the lives of workers and their families. As President of the Nashville Central Labor Council, she brought together unions from across Middle Tennessee to fight for fair wages, safe workplaces, dignity on the job, and economic justice for all. Her leadership extended far beyond the labor movement, building meaningful partnerships throughout the community and championing causes that strengthened working families across our state.
Vonda believed that every worker deserved respect, opportunity, and a voice. Whether she was organizing workers, mentoring the next generation of labor leaders, advocating at the State Capitol, or standing alongside community partners in the fight for working people, she led with unwavering conviction, compassion, and courage.
"Vonda was one of the strongest voices for working people our state has ever known. She always led with her heart and never lost sight of the people she was fighting for. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of union members and labor leaders for years to come. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and the entire Nashville labor community and beyond."
Billy Dycus, President, Tennessee AFL-CIO
"Vonda and I were close and grew up in the labor movement together. Through the good times and the bad, Vonda was always a strong voice for working people and the labor movement. She cared deeply about others, treated everyone with respect, and earned that same respect in return. Our hearts are heavy today, and we are deeply saddened by this tremendous loss to Tennessee's labor movement."
AJ Starling, Secretary-Treasurer, Tennessee AFL-CIO
The Tennessee AFL-CIO extends our heartfelt condolences to the McDaniel family, her union family, and everyone whose life was touched by her leadership and friendship. We join the labor movement across Tennessee and beyond in mourning this tremendous loss while celebrating a life devoted to justice, equality, and the dignity of work. Vonda's voice will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to guide the labor movement for generations to come.
Vonda served as the President of the Nashville-Middle Tennessee Central Labor Council and as the Vice President of the Tennessee AFL-CIO. Rest in power, Sister Vonda. We will honor your legacy by carrying the fight forward for every working Tennessean. Thank you for your lifetime of service to our labor movement, our communities, and the countless workers whose lives you changed.
